In an exploration of movement and identity, Hoor Malas embarks on a deeply introspective journey that weaves together the threads of tradition and personal freedom.
“What if my story and my culture influenced the way I move? Who is pulling the strings? Memory, mind, or body?”
If My body had a Name is a reconciliation of the weight of inherited social expectations with the liberating expression that dance offers.

A choreographer and performer, Hoor Malas was born in Syria. She began her dance journey at the age of eight at the Damascus Ballet School. In 2007, earned her bachelor's degree in dance from the Higher Institute of Arts in Damascus, and obtained her diploma in contemporary dance from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds, UK in 2008.
Hoor taught contemporary dance techniques for ten years at the Art Conservatoire in Damascus. She co-founded her own contemporary dance company, Sima Dance Company, with Alaa Kremid from 2006–2013.
Initially, she only had a passion for dancing and didn't start choreographing until 2014, when the war caused an exodus of choreographers from the Syrian capital. Hoor moved to Montreal in 2020 to further develop her skills as a choreographer and performer. Her work stems from personal reflection and incorporates socio-cultural and political issues.
