Kokoro Dance Classes – Barbara Bourget and Jay Hirabayashi

jaybarbMarch 6th – 10th; March 13th – 16th; and March 20th – 24th at KW Studios (Woodwards Building 111 West Hastings).

These classes for intermediate-advanced students are free.

Kokoro Dance classes build strength, flexibility, and stamina, as well as developing technical and performance skills. The difference between the two types of classes reflects the different approaches to the same end taken by Barbara and Jay. Barbara’s classes focus on technical training and have a consistent structure from warm-up to movement in space. Jay’s classes are more eclectically varied and include more time for improvisational exploration. The two approaches complement each other and dancers are recommended to take both.

Master Class – Dairakudakan

March 7th, 2017 from 9:30am to 11:30am at KW Studios (Woodwards Building 111 West Hastings).

This class is for advanced students.

Master Class with Takuya Muramatsu and Daiichiro Yuyama

Takuya Muramatsu is a principal dancer and choreographer with Dairakudakan since 1994, and head of the Dairakudakan school. Dairakudakan has been guided by Artistic Director Akaji Maro’s butoh concepts including tempu-tenshiki (“being born into the world is a great talent in itself”) and ichinin-ippa (“one dancer, one school”), which stresses the importance of individuals developing unique movement vocabularies. This master class is a rare opportunity to be introduced to the teaching of Japan’s oldest butoh company and a great introduction to their performances at the Vancouver Playhouse on March 10th and 11th.
