Single Room, 37 Arts, Lament

LAFA & Artists realizes the dream of two renowned figures in Taiwanese contemporary dance—Fang-Yi Sheu, a former principal dancer with the Martha Graham Company and decorated choreographer Pagarlava Bulareyaung, a native of the Paiwan Tribe in Taiwan, and a former member of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. Sheu performs Single Room mostly as a silhouetted duet between herself and a large table creating striking imagery that is delicate and serene. Blareyaung’s elemental but powerful choreography of 37 Arts stirs strong emotions from his dancers and from his audiences. His 2009 choreography, Lament, commissioned to be part of the Martha Graham Dance Company’s “Lamentation Variations” project, evokes a personification of grief.
